How to Make Wax for Candles

Have you ever thought of making your own candle wax? If you are interested in trying candle making but don't want to spend money on purchasing wax or other items that you may use only once, a great option is making your candle wax at home.

Melting old candles and re-using the wax is not only an economical decision, it is also an environmentally friendly choice as well. As well as gathering your own, ask your friends and family for their old candles, even if they are no longer able to light them.

Once you have collected your old candles, follow these instructions.

First, you will need to gather the following materials:
1) A pair of scissors.
2) A pot. An old camping pot is preferable; however any small pot will work.
3) A stove or hot plate.
4) Old candles with similar colors.
5) Small containers or baby food glass/jars. Actually, you can use almost anything, however keep in mind this will be the base in which your new candle sits.

Next, you can make your candles by following these steps:

1. Remove the old candles from their original containers. Use the pair of scissors to cut out the wicks and wick tabs if they are still present and place them aside. Do not throw them away as you will need them later.

2. Turn on the stove and place the pot on it. The temperature should be set to medium, as turning it to high may be very dangerous.

3. Place small chunks of the wax in the pot, and slowly add more. Stir often. Make sure you use colours that are similar, as adding random colours will likely end up in a black, grey or brown colour.

4. While the candle wax is melting, take the old wicks that you cut out of the previous candles and decide which ones are still usable. Do not forget about the melting candle wax that is on the stove!

5. Once the candle wax has melted, pour it into the small containers or glass baby food jars, and let them sit.

6. As the candles are starting to cool, hold the wick in place in the center of the container, and wait until it is hard enough to hold the wick itself.

7. Let go of the wick and let the candle set. It should take approximately 4 hours to completely harden.

8. Repeat this process as many times as it takes until you have used up all of your old wax. Once you have used your new candles, keep them again so you can re-use the wax once more.

This simple way of creating new candles is cost effective, environmentally friendly and fun. If you have followed these steps properly, you will have made your own candle wax without purchasing any additional material. If you can afford it, feel free to purchase fragrance oils or coloured dye in order to add scent or other different colours to your candles. Be creative and have fun with this project.
