There are many different types of candles to make such as mason jar candles, pillar candles, candles from beeswax or soy just to name a few.

Lots of folks have learned how to make soy candles at home, so here are a few tips to help you get started.

To begin, you'll require all of your candle making supples available and accessible in a work area that's safe from children and pets. Then, choose the type or size of soy candle you will create. If you're a beginner, then a good suggestion is to start with a little candle like a votive.

You'll need around two ounces of soy wax for a good votive soy candle. Since you will be measuring accurately, one pound of wax will make eight votives.

Now, you're ready to begin melting the soy wax. For this step, you'll need something to melt the wax in. A double boiler works well, but a wax melter speeds up the process and keeps your stove safe from wax spillage and a possible fire.

By adding color and fragrance you'll create a very desirable candle. Craft stores both online and locally carry soy candle dye. Put the color into the melted wax. If you're adding scents, put about one ounce scent for each pound of soy wax. Add fragrance when your soy wax reaches about one hundred seventy degrees to ensure the scent adheres to the wax well, stirring well for about two minutes or so.

After the wax has melted and you've added the dye or scent, reduce your heat to one hundred fifty degrees and prepare the molds by heating them a bit. Now that your wax is cooled to the right temperature you're ready to pour into your molds. Use a candle pouring pot or a pitcher with a pouring spout. Put the wicks in after your wax has set a little. Put the wick in straight and to the bottom of the candle mold making sure it's in the middle of the mold.

Now that you've made your soy candle, let the wax set for about five or six hours for it to be ready to trim the wick to your desired length.

There are lots of candle crafting hints that you can learn prior to making your first candle. Books to learn how to make candles at home can be found in bookstores, your library or online.

Want To Make Gel Candles?

Candle making for fun is a great hobby. Candles are lovely to see, especially coloful gel candles, which are not only pretty to look at, but user-friendly becasue they're easy to light and slow burning, not to mention money savers.

Gel candles are affordable and easy to make, and the craft is a breeze to learn. There are many different additions you can make to the basic gel candle such as aroma and embeds. So, let's learn the basics of how to make gel candles.

To begin, gather together gel wax, scented oil, zinc wicks and color. Be sure to select zinc wicks when you're shopping for candle supplies. Cotton wicks will not work because they absorb the gel and make it hard to light and burn. Most craft stores have a nice selection of candle supplies, either online or at a store.

What kind of container should you use for your gel candle? Usually you find gel candles in clear glass containers, but any noncombustible jar or glass is acceptable. Consider pouring your gel wax into wine glasses or clear vases and include different embeds such as colorful rocks, marbles or shells in the gel.

Use a hot glue gun to attach the wick into the bottom of the container. Make sure you've allowed enough wick length to stick out of the top of the container.

Use a double boiler or wax melter to melt small strips of the gel wax until it reaches two hundred degrees. Watching the temperature is cruicial in the gel candle craft as too high or too low temperature can have detrimental affects on your results. Too high and the pretty color will be lost, too low and the gel will not set correctly.

Adding color to your candle is easy and you'll need less since gel candles are vibrant by nature. Put your color of choice into the liquid wax very slowly and continue to add more or stop when you've reached the color you want. If you're planning on adding embeds, then use less color so your object will show up through the color. Placing the embeds around the edges of the container so they're easy to see is a good tip to follow.

Another tip is to heat the container in the microwave for a minute to get it good and hot before adding the gel so you don't have those ugly bubbles that are often seen in bad gel candles. Put the embeds in after you heat the jar while keeping the gel hot. Hold the wick from over the top or hang it over the edge of the container before you pour the gel. Once the gel is set, cut the wick to the length you desire. The next thing to add is scent if you want.

It's very easy to make candles at home, and making gel candles is a simple and affordable hobby. You can save money on your own candles or on nice gifts. Have fun making your own candles.

How to Make Your Own Jar Candles at Home

Candles serve a number of purposes in any type of decor, be it a room in the house or in your office. Not only do candles add to the overall appeal of a space, many of them are also scented with fragrances to help cover up any odors. Of course we all know that candles can be easily purchased at a local retailer, but for the "do-it-yourselfers" among us, making candles from scratch may be a more attractive alternative to buying from a department store. The benefits to doing so are numerous, but most importantly making candles at home allows us to create candles that offer scents of our choosing rather than whatever the retailers try to sell us.

Despite what many may think, making candles from home is particularly inexpensive, and can even be more cost effective than buying from a store if you're interested in acquiring many candles of the same fragrance. You'll need a few items to begin creating your own candles. I'll be focusing on Jar Candles as these types of candles are among the easiest to create and are without a doubt near the most popular of candle styles.

To get started, you're going to need a stove top, a decent-sized pot, a metal coffee can, an anchored wick, a jar, a glue gun, a few Popsicle sticks and some wax. Your wax can either come from unused candles you already have lying around your house or packaged paraffin wax. On average, a quarter pound of wax is more than enough to fill a 12 ounce jar or container. You'll also be wanting some fragrance oil in any scent of your liking, and oils like these are sold in almost any fragrance you can think of. If you are planning to dye your candles, crayons will do the trick. I also encourage you to keep some safety gear handy since you will be working around extreme temperatures. A pair of good safety goggles and gloves are recommended. Any items you don't already have lying around your home can be picked up at a local hobby store.

Start by gathering your materials in a centralized area so you have easy access to everything. Before melting down your wax, it's a good idea to prepare your jar(s). Each candle will need a wick, so prepare a wick at least three inches longer than the depth of your jar. The wider the jar, the wider your wick will need to be to promote an even burn of your candle. If each wick is not already attached to an anchor, you will need to do so at this point. Wick attached, glue each anchor to the bottom of a jar, securing each wick as close to the center of the jar's base as possible.

Set your stove top burner to a medium-to-high temperature; your wax will need to heat up to around 160 degrees to reach the ideal consistency. Fill your decent-sized pot with 2 to 3 inches of water and place it on the burner. We'll be using a double boiler type method to heat the wax, so we'll be placing our coffee can in the pot of water. Cut your wax into smaller chunks to speed up the melting process and drop it into your coffee can. If you are using old candles for wax, be sure to remove any old wicks with a fork or similar utensil once you are able to do so. Exercise extreme caution when heating your wax, and should your mixture catch fire, cover your pot, turn off the stove and refrain from dousing a wax fire with water.

Once you are able to stir the wax with a spoon, you can begin to add any dyes or fragrances you would like your candle to include. The amount of fragrance you add should be chosen at your discretion, but keep in mind that a little bit goes a long way. When adding crayons to dye your candle, be sure to remove as much of the paper from the crayon as you can. Continue to stir until both the fragrances and dyes have mixed with your melted wax.

We will now begin the process of filling any jars with wax. Before pouring your wax, grab a Popsicle stick and place it across the top of your jar. Wrap or drape the excess wick across the Popsicle stick, encouraging your wick to remain as centered as possible within the jar. Carefully pour your wax into the jar, all the while making certain that your wick remains centered. Leave around an inch of clearance at the top of your jar to ensure that any lids can be reattached if necessary.

As your candle begins to cool, it will usually shrink in size within your container. If you find that your candle requires it, add additional melted wax as needed. Your candle may need a day or more to completely cool. Becoming over anxious and using your candle before it's ready could very easily undo all of your hard work, so be patient and make sure your candle has had plenty of time to cool before lighting it. Once you are certain your candle is ready, cut your wick so that ¾ of an inch to an inch is left protruding from your candle. Your candle is now ready to burn! Play with various fragrances and dyes to create your ideal candle.

Always remember to use extreme caution when making your own candles from home. If you would prefer not to deal with the hassle of creating your own candles, you can always buy candles online or at a local department store.

Make Your Own Candles As a Fun Easy Hobby Which Can Be Converted Into an Inexpensive Home Business

Candles were a necessity of life for the past several thousand years in order to see at night. They can still be used that way but now it would be more so out of fun and enjoyment only. Candle use and candle making today is done as a hobby (which can very easily be converted into a home business). You can buy a few inexpensive supplies and make your own candles in less then one day with the learning curve and everything else included.

All that is needed in the way of candle ingredients are 4 things: wax, wicks, fragrance and dye. And you can get wax that already has its own color and natural fragrance so all you would need is the wax and the wick. Beeswax is one such wax and is one of the waxes used since ages past. It is white or yellow in color and has its own sweet smelling fragrance. Bayberry wax is naturally dark green in color and has its own sweet scent to it. Not that using your own scent and dye is a problem but it's 2 less things to worry about if you are just starting.

If you want to make your own candles you should educate yourself on the various waxes but most people start with paraffin wax because it's easy to work with and is inexpensive. A real fun candle to make is the gel candle. It's a little more complex then the wax candles but gel candles are a lot of fun because they are clear. Meaning you can see through them. Which means you can see things inside the gel candles which were placed there when the candle was made. You can put decoration, coins, beads, glitter and you name it in the candle to be seen. You can even pour the gel in such a way that it will create bubbles which can be seen. This kind of thing is a lot of fun for the kid inside all of us.

Besides those 4 above mentioned candle ingredients you can get at a craft store there is some equipment you will need but only a little. You will need some molds to pour your wax into. A thermometer is recommended but not vitally necessary. And if you want you can use some mason jars you may have around the house to pour your wax into rather then a mold. Or put a candle inside a coffee cup. These would be container candles which will burn inside the container (the jar or coffee cup) whereas with the molds the candles will be removed as free standing candles.

Place your solid wax in a pot and place it in a bigger pot that has water in it (the double boiler system) and heat the water. This gives the pot the wax is in a more even distribution of the heat rather then putting it directly on a burner which avoids burning the wax. Heat the wax until it is liquid.

Place your wick in the bottom of your jar or mold gluing it to the center of the bottom and draping the top of the wick over the jar top and pour in the melted wax. Pour just a little bit higher then you think you should cause it will settle down as it cools. Center the wick in the top of the melted wax and hold the wick in place by placing a pencil or stick across the top of the jar and bending the wick over the pencil. Oh to glue the wick to the bottom center you can use actual glue or you can dip the bottom of the wick in the melted wax then place it in the center and give it a moment to cool and when it does it will stick.

Does it sound easy enough to make your own candles? It couldn't be easier. Get the inexpensive paraffin (don't get fancy in the beginning and get the gel as much fun as it sounds like) and use a jar or coffee cup or buy a mold or two and you are in business. If you get your stuff today you will have your first candle(s) in a few short hours. How nice is that?

Make Your Own Candles came from a website that has candle making tips which are free for the taking at http://candledesigning.com/ so go there and grab some tips for making beautiful candles.

How to Make Wax for Candles

Have you ever thought of making your own candle wax? If you are interested in trying candle making but don't want to spend money on purchasing wax or other items that you may use only once, a great option is making your candle wax at home.

Melting old candles and re-using the wax is not only an economical decision, it is also an environmentally friendly choice as well. As well as gathering your own, ask your friends and family for their old candles, even if they are no longer able to light them.

Once you have collected your old candles, follow these instructions.

First, you will need to gather the following materials:
1) A pair of scissors.
2) A pot. An old camping pot is preferable; however any small pot will work.
3) A stove or hot plate.
4) Old candles with similar colors.
5) Small containers or baby food glass/jars. Actually, you can use almost anything, however keep in mind this will be the base in which your new candle sits.

Next, you can make your candles by following these steps:

1. Remove the old candles from their original containers. Use the pair of scissors to cut out the wicks and wick tabs if they are still present and place them aside. Do not throw them away as you will need them later.

2. Turn on the stove and place the pot on it. The temperature should be set to medium, as turning it to high may be very dangerous.

3. Place small chunks of the wax in the pot, and slowly add more. Stir often. Make sure you use colours that are similar, as adding random colours will likely end up in a black, grey or brown colour.

4. While the candle wax is melting, take the old wicks that you cut out of the previous candles and decide which ones are still usable. Do not forget about the melting candle wax that is on the stove!

5. Once the candle wax has melted, pour it into the small containers or glass baby food jars, and let them sit.

6. As the candles are starting to cool, hold the wick in place in the center of the container, and wait until it is hard enough to hold the wick itself.

7. Let go of the wick and let the candle set. It should take approximately 4 hours to completely harden.

8. Repeat this process as many times as it takes until you have used up all of your old wax. Once you have used your new candles, keep them again so you can re-use the wax once more.

This simple way of creating new candles is cost effective, environmentally friendly and fun. If you have followed these steps properly, you will have made your own candle wax without purchasing any additional material. If you can afford it, feel free to purchase fragrance oils or coloured dye in order to add scent or other different colours to your candles. Be creative and have fun with this project.

Melissa Jones, among other things is an avid candle maker and has created a website dedicated to helping people create their own exquisite, hand-crafted candles.

Want to learn more about how to make candle wax?

Visit my Website to get helpful tips and in

Lotion Candles – 6 “Scentsible” Buying Tips

What are lotion candles? If you’ve not heard of them, you’re not alone. First appearing on the market in 2004, they are just now starting to gain a presence in the marketplace.

Whereas candles were once simply a functional way to light the dark, candles are now most often purchased to scent homes or to add a romantic or relaxing ambiance.

Lotion candles, also called body candles and massage candles, are yet another type of candle, this one serving several simultaneous functions. While they light a room, provide a wonderful ambiance, and emit subtle fragrance, lotion candles also contain cosmetic ingredients that make them a superb body moisturizer and massage oil alternative.

Because of their ingredients, a true lotion candle will melt at a very low temperature, usually at just 101 – 102 degrees. At slightly above body temperature, they are warm and not hot.

When shopping, how do you know if you’ve found a “true” lotion candle of good quality? Here are six tips to help you shop wisely.

1. Does the candle label list ingredients? Because lotion candles are intended for use on the body, they fall under FDA guidelines. Lotion candles should have all ingredients listed in order of prominence on the product label. If ingredients are not presented, the maker is not in compliance with the FDA.

2. Does the label list net weight and manufacturer information? As an FDA regulated product, the net weight must be included on packaging. The phone number and/or address of the manufacturer or private-labeled reseller must also be present.

3. Is the fragrance skin-safe? Not all fragrance is. Some traditional candle makers are now beginning to make lotion candles as well. If those candle-makers are not familiar with bath and body product requirements, they may be using fragrance oils not intended for body use. If you are buying from an independent candle-maker, be sure to ask about the fragrance they use. Fragrance that is not skin-safe can cause adverse reactions.

4. Is the fragrance used in skin-safe amounts? Even if a fragrance is developed for safe body use, the amount of fragrance used in lotion candles is only a fraction of the amount used in a traditional scented candle. Using more can be toxic to the skin. Beware of anyone touting a lotion candle that is “highly scented” or that can “scent your whole room.” Such claims almost guarantee that there is too much fragrance used and that the candle is not skin-safe, even if the fragrance oil used is skin-safe by definition.

5. Does the container make it easy to access the melted lotion? Many traditional candle jars will make it difficult to get to the melted liquid for easy and convenient use. The container should be easy to dip into to access the melted lotion.

6. How does the candle feel when applied? If you’re able to sample, a quality lotion candle will not feel waxy or leave a heavy residue. If it does, your candle is most likely made with traditional candle wax. Quality lotion candles feature cosmetic-grade ingredients that will provide your skin with the greatest benefits. A quality lotion candle should melt into a moisturizing liquid that fully soaks into your skin within a few minutes leaving a silky, soft feeling.

If you haven’t tried a lotion candle yet, you’re in for a treat. Just do your homework to ensure that you’re buying a candle made by a quality manufacturer that follows FDA guidelines and uses high quality ingredients. Then just light it and pamper yourself or a partner with the rich, warm lotion. Enjoy!

Article by:
Karen Porter is a writer, speaker and entrepreneur. Candle making usually requires some experimentation, but when you discover how to make those perfect candles, it’s well worth the effort.

There are a few basic supplies needed for making most candles:

wax
wicks
mold or containers
wax melter
candle making thermometer
fragrances
dyes
putty for molds

First decide on a wax you would like to start with, there are three different kinds to choose from: paraffin wax, soy wax, and beeswax. Paraffin wax is most commonly used in candles, this wax is found at most candle making stores. Soy wax is all natural, made from soybeans, and cleans up easily with soap and water. Beeswax is all natural too, and making beeswax candles is often easiest because you simply wrap a sheet of beeswax tightly around a wick then seal it with your thumb, which means no melting is required.

To begin, spread newspapers around the candle making area. First you melt your paraffin or soy wax and it must be double-boiled. Usually you place a large pot that is about half-filled with water on a burner over low-medium heat, place a melter in the water, then gradually place wax pieces into the melter. When the wax has melted, you can add coloring or fragrance as desired.

To make molded candles, cut the wick two inches taller than you want the candle to be, then thread it through the hole at the bottom of the mold, then plug the outside of the hole with putty. Place a pencil or similar item over the top of the mold and tie the top of the wick to it, centering the wick. If the mold is cardboard, plastic, or glass, heat the wax to 130 degrees Fahrenheit. If the mold is metal, then heat the wax to 190 degrees. You can use a candle or candy thermometer to measure this. When the right temperature is reached, lift the melter by the handle and slowly pour the wax into the mold. Let cool for twelve hours then refrigerate for twelve more hours, then your candle is ready to be removed.

To make votives and other small container candles, you can use pre-tabbed wicks by simply placing them in the center of the votive candle molds or containers, then pour the wax mixture over and let stand for twelve hours, refrigerating the votives.

Jennifer Hall is a writer who provides information on shopping online for www.candles-4-u.com/scented_candles.htm www.candles-4-u.com/candle_making.htmwww.candles-4-u.com/candle_holders.htm When she's not online, Jennifer's spending time with her family, gardening, or playing the piano or accordion. and

Massage Candles - The Miracle Candle For Relaxation And Romance

What type of candle is it that so many people are craving? What type of candle is also becoming a permanent fixture on our bedside tables? The answer is a “Massage Candle”, also known as a lotion candle, body candle or body wax. This novel and very sensual candle is the ultimate product to enhance a romantic evening, to enjoy a spa quality experience at home, or to nourish and moisturize your skin.

A massage candle appeals to three of our five human senses: the sense of sight, from the romantic lighting created by the glow of the candle; the sense of smell, from the delicate, alluring fragrance it slowly releases; and the sense of touch, as your partner’s hands slowly massage the warm and moisturizing massage oil, created by the candle, over your body. Mmmm, so inviting, relaxing, intimate and delectable! I refer to the massage candle as a “miracle candle” due to its marvelous ability to transport you into a magical world of absolute pleasure. Everyone should experience the bliss of being pampered with a massage while using a massage candle.

In our day-to-day lives, our bodies become overwhelmed with stress and tension from the trials and tribulations of life. And who wouldn’t want to have that stress and tension eased by receiving a body massage from that “special person” in our life, especially in the safe, warm and comfortable environment of our own homes? We all crave touch and research indicates that a massage provides a therapeutic effect by relaxing us physically, spiritually and emotionally. This enhances our sense of well-being. When you relax and allow yourself to enjoy your partner’s touch, you may even begin to feel amorous and progress to a more intimate level. Either way, a massage candle is a sensational tool that provides the ability to escape and let the world revolve around you. However, what is most precious is a deep awareness of the special person giving you the massage.

How does this massage oil candle work you may ask? You simply light the candle and let it burn for approximately 20 minutes to form a melt pool of massage oil. When it is ready, extinguish the flame and drizzle a small amount of the warm, moisturizing oil onto your partner's body. Next, have your partner massage it directly into your skin. Since the base of the massage oil blend is soy oil (derived from soy beans), it burns very clean and long. Soy oil also burns much cooler than traditional paraffin wax, so the melted massage oil does not get too hot to apply directly to the skin. The massage oil will only be slightly warmer than skin temperature.

Of course, if relaxation and romance is not on your mind, most massage oil candles can also be used without melting as a body balm or lotion. The candle may be used in its solid form by scooping out a small amount with your fingertips and applying it to your skin. When the solid lotion reaches skin temperature it will melt into your skin, releasing its moisturizing properties. Manufacturers of massage candles develop them differently based on their own formulas, so you should always check the ingredients prior to making a purchase. For example, in addition to Cosmetic-Grade Soy Oil, our premium quality massage candle contains such skin-nourishing ingredients as; Shea and Mango Butters, Grapeseed and Jojoba Oils, Beeswax, and Vitamin E. This blend of skin nourishing ingredients deeply moisturizes the skin, leaving it lustrous, silky smooth and delicately scented. Massage candles are also an environmentally friendly product, made with all natural ingredients. Massage candles made with pure essential oils are organic and provide a true aromatherapy experience.

So, whether you are in the mood for romance, wish to enjoy a spa quality experience at home, or desire an excellent skin care product, the massage candle is for you. Once you have experienced this mesmerizing candle, you will find it to be a charming and irresistible product that you too will come to refer to as a “miracle candle”. After you experience this unique product, I am confident that you will always have a body massage candle on your nightstand.

Denise Cassaly is the owner of Je T’aime Fragrances, a leading designer, manufacturer, and retailer of Gourmet Scented Soy Candles and Soy Body Massage Candles. New Trends in Home Decorating

“Scent-mosphere” – The Hot New Trend in Home Decorating!

(ARA) - Scent-mosphere?! You won’t find it in the dictionary, but it’s a hot home decorating trend that’s all about styling your home with an eye (or nose) for all your senses, from the touch of fabrics, to the color of the wall to the acoustics of hardwood floors.

As the name “scent-mosphere” implies -- this trend actually starts by following your nose in styling your home with fragrance. Why start there? Well, in research by Dr. Alan Hirsch, M.D., “Smells are one of the quickest ways to change mood and emotion.” They’re also one of the first things you notice about a room even before you enter it.

“Fragrance can be a springboard for an entire room’s style,” says design guru, author and HGTV personality Susie Coelho. “Colors, textures, and style will flow from the feelings and the images that a specific fragrance conjures up.”

“Our olfactory sense (the sense of smell) is so powerful. It’s intimately-linked to the brain’s emotion and memory functions, and it’s why scents can have such a strong impact on your state of mind and emotional well-being,” according to Rick Ruffolo, senior vice president of brand, marketing, and innovation at Yankee Candle Company.

Over the last 2 to 3 years, the use of fragrances in public gathering areas including hotels such as the Westin and stores such as Apple or the Body Shop further reinforce the subtle, yet powerful influence scent has on people’s attitudes.

Ruffolo explains, “Take Yankee Candle’s classic Clean Cotton scent, for instance. It might transport you back to a time when your mom would dry sheets on the line in the backyard on a bright spring day. So, now your mind subconsciously pictures blue skies, green grass, white sheets, pretty flowers … and, then, suddenly you have a room décor theme that’s perfect for the season.”

So, starting with fragrance just makes sense (or “scents”).

We asked Rick Ruffolo for his recommendations on seasonal fragrance selections:

For spring -- Ruffolo recommends light floral scents such as Yankee Candle’s Lilac Blossoms or Sweet Honeysuckle fragrances, or to focus on “fresh, open-window” fragrances such as Clean Cotton, Country Linen, or Lemon Lavender.

During the late spring and into summer -- fruits are the best choice. “Fruits provide such a great palette of fragrance choices from which to choose … from orchard fruits such as Macintosh Apple, to citrus fruits such as Juicy Orange and Sparkling Lemon, to tropical fruits such as Pineapple Gardenia, Canary Island Banana, or Brazilian Passion Fruit, … as well as classic berry fragrances such as Sweet Strawberry, Black Raspberry, or New Zealand Wild Berry.”

“Fall is a virtual cornucopia of fragrance choice mainly focused on foods and spices,” Ruffolo adds. “Pumpkin Spice, Cinnamon, Farmhouse Apple, and Harvest are a few that come to mind.”

“The Christmas season is where fragrance and emotion come together like no other time of year. Certain classic fragrances such as Christmas Cookie, Home for the Holidays, Mistletoe, Christmas Wreath, and Balsam & Cedar all evoke special memories of holiday traditions, and are a great way to create a welcoming environment in your home.”

“Once you’ve selected the fragrance,” Ruffolo shares, “the form is the next important consideration. Lighting candles are the preferred choice since they combine color, light, and great fragrance experience in one product. Additionally, an electric home fragrance outlet plug unit is ideal for maintaining the scent in any room 24/7. Other choices which have a decorative twist include Reed Diffusers and Yankee Candle’s concentrated home fragrance oils. Your particular combinations will depend on the size of the room and how much fragrance you want at any given time.”

Wow! It all makes perfect sense (there’s that pun, again). Creating the perfect scent-mosphere for each room adds a whole new multi-sensory experience to your home, and is an easy, low-cost way to seasonalize your home throughout the year. Apparently, when it comes to styling with fragrance, your nose has the best eye for design.

Courtesy of ARAcontent

Candle Making Books

<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=familycrockpo-20&o=1&p=8&l=as1&asins=1580173667&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="width: 120px; Some shop for candles simply based on scent or color. Other candle buyers are looking for clean burning candles. Today’s candle buyers are also now looking for wickless candles and decorative candle warmers. Candle “fashion”, candle safety, candles without soot, and high quality candle scents are becoming features candle enthusiasts are taking a closer look at.

Types of Candle Warmers

Candle warmers come in a variety of styles. Some are simply warming plates used to put a jar candle on. Other candle warmers resemble a crock pot for a jar candle. A jar candle is placed in the crock and warmed. Another type of candle warmer features a small light bulb that warms a dish filled with with scented wax. As the wax is warmed, the candle fragrance is released from the wax.

Candle Warmer Considerations

Not all candles are appropriate for candle warmers. Some candles have two wicks others have metal tabs that hold the wicks in place. Still other jar candles are made with a glass variety that is prone to breakage when heated. A variety of factors can result in broken jars and a mess of melted wax. When these type of candles are placed in candle warmers, the glass may crack because the glass itself it is not meant for that type of heating process or the heating of the metal tabs increases the glass temperature beyond the point it was manufactured for. When choosing a jar candle for candle warmers be sure to find out if that jar candle can safely be used with a jar candle warmer.

Why Candle Warmers

Scents can create a cozy home or office environment. But because of the flame from candles, for safety reasons, we often find that candles are off limits in offices or dorms. Electric Candle warmers are a great solution for homes and offices that wish to go “flameless”. Candle warmers with the heating element based and top dish for wax are an excellent solution for those who like to try a variety of scents and like to be able to change candle scents more frequently.

The glow of the light in these warmers makes a nice night light. Of course, always place your candle warmer in a safe location where it will not get bumped and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

Candle fragrances are a key to candle enjoyment. Find a source of candle melts that you find give you a good scent throw. That means, the scent from candle wax disperses well throughout your room. A low melting point wax will produce a liquid wax that is less hot to the touch if spilled or touched. Also, the candle melts are easy to change in between uses and are often much less expensive than purchasing larger candles. With a candle warmer you can easily enjoy a great variety of candle fragrances.

Candle warmers offer the benefits of safety without a flame, a large variety of candle fragrances, candle enjoyment without soot, inexpensive wax for melting, and decorative styling for most any decor.

Start your own candle warmer business or shop online for candle warmers and candle melts at: http://www.candlewarmershop.com

Beginners Guide on How to Make Candles

Candle making can be a fun activity and it can also be a fun and profitable business. Making candles is not a difficult process but there are a few things that you need to know and a few steps that you need to follow.

You can make candles simply by forming them by hand, or you can use candle molds, or you can use candle making kits.

The beauty about candle making is that you can correct any errors by simply melting down the wax and starting from scratch again.

Make sure that your working area is clean and free of dust, crumbs, and other things that could get stuck in your candle wax and ruin your new candle.

For easy cleanup, cover your working area with newspaper.

When you melt the wax do not walk away; always supervise the melting process. Never use a microwave to melt the wax because it to easily boils the wax instead of melting it.

It can be fun to involve your children with the process, but you have to be very careful and closely supervise them. Small children can be tempted to touch the hot wax and since the wax smells good they might even be tempted to eat it. Never leave the child alone near a wax container.

While the wax is melting also melt your color wax dye. Stand clear while the color wax dye is melting because you do not want to inhale the chemicals that are released during the melting process.

As soon as the wax is fully melted add your color wax dye to the liquid candle wax.

The next step is to pour the wax into your containers. Save a small quantity of wax, you will be using it later in the process.

Should you spill wax on yourself, use cold water to solidify the wax and then remove it. Never try to brush the hot wax from your skin.

Insert the wick and let the candles cool overnight.

The next day you will be using the wax that you saved to fill in any holes that formed in the candle during the cooling down period.

For decorating your candles you could use rubberstamps or stencils to make patterns on the candles.

You can also add flair to your candles by decorating them with flower petals, leaves, or herbs. For this you use a heated spoon to attach the petal or leaf to the candle.

Making your own decorated and/or scented candles is fun when you're doing it and could provide you with hours of joy and relaxation afterwards.

Chrystal Holman recommends these beautiful scented and unscented, wax, soy, and gel candles available in a wide selection.

Do you make you own candles? Beeswax Candles vs Paraffin

When you compare beeswax candles vs paraffin, pure beeswax candles are:

More economical

Better for your health

Better for the environment

Unsurpassed for sheer beauty.

Economy: Beeswax is the most economical candle wax! When kept out of drafts, beeswax candles are smokeless, dripless and burn up to five times longer than paraffin candles. So while they cost more initially, they save you money in the long run.

Health: Paraffin candles create indoor air pollution! Paraffin is made from petroleum sludge. It is highly refined and treated with carcinogenic chemicals. The black smoke a paraffin candle emits is basically diesel exhaust!

There are a number of major toxic chemicals in paraffin, including the carcinogens benzene and toluene. Most of the wicks in paraffin candles contain metal cores and lead. When they burn, those metals go up in smoke. You don't want to breathe all that, do you?

Pure Beeswax burns cleanly, is considered hypoallergenic, and is recommended for people with asthma and chemical sensitivity.

Beeswax is the only wax that emits negative ions when it burns. Negative ions help to clean the air of dust, smoke and pollens. Negative ions can help to reduce fatigue. Keep a beeswax candle burning on your desk while you work, and notice how much calmer you feel during the busy day.

Environment: Being a petroleum fuel, paraffin candles are reliant upon foreign oil. American beeswax, on the other hand, is made from a natural renewable resource right here in the USA!

Beauty: Like fine chocolate, good beeswax developes a soft, velvety "bloom" on its surface. Beeswax candles have a brighter flame than do paraffin candles. This golden flame often has a halo around it.

How to be a smart candle shopper:

1. Make sure the candles are described as "Pure" or "100% Beeswax" and the wicks are 100% cotton. Labeling laws allow candles that have as little as 10% beeswax to be sold as "beeswax candles". Most of these so-called beeswax candles are blended with cheap paraffin in order to cut costs.

2. Make sure the beeswax is American. Many foreign countries allow dangerous chemicals to be used on the beehives as well as in the processing. Some countries ban the importation of such beeswax, but the USA does not.

3. Always buy unscented beeswax candles. "Why?" you say.

Because beeswax candles have their own marvelous honey fragrance!

Because synthetic fragrance chemicals are petroleum chemicals- and are especially toxic when burning! "Aromatherapy" candles made using synthetic fragrances are merely trading on the public's ignorance and trust. The American Lung Association says "Refrain from burning scented or slow-burning candles that have additives."

Essential oils, while of safer origins than synthetics, were never intended to be set on fire. Essential oils turn into unknown chemical compounds when burned, and just because they're natural doesn't mean they're safe. The proper way to use essential oils for Aromatherapy is to inhale their aromas fresh or in steam vapor, not in a burning candle.

A wonderful way to use essential oils for aromatherapy is to use a diffuser called an "oil warmer", "tart warmer" or "scented oil warmer" with a beeswax tea light. You not only get the full benefit of aromatherapy, you also receive the negative ions and golden flame that only a beeswax candle can give.

A pure beeswax candle creates an aura of peace and serenity that cannot be matched by any other kind of candle. They offer you wonderful scents to help you relax and feel calm. Placing aromatherapy candles in your bathroom while you relax in the warm water will allow you to breath calmly and feel the tension leave your body from head to toe. You will need to select an aromatherapy candle for your specific need as they are designed to alter your mental state for the better. Some aromatherapy candles help you relax, others rejuvenate your energy. I love the ones that help you fall asleep, of course I have to make sure the candle is out before I am!

Charka are aromatherapy candles that are believed to have a metaphysical energy about them. They are made from natural herbs and waxes. These candles are often used during body massage sessions to help the customer relax and let the massage work out the stress and anxiety from the body. All types of aromatherapy candles can have a positive affect on your state of mind and your surroundings.

While it is common to choose candles based on their smell, it is important to choose aromatherapy candles based on what your physical and mental needs are. To create a sexy, sensual environment choose a Jasmine candle. For someone who is often tired or ran down, go for a rejuvenating or invigorating candle such as Spearmint or Peppermint. Orange and Grapefruit will help you stay focused and feel less frazzled and distracted. Cintronella aromatherapy candles help reduce headaches, Chamomille helps you get a good night of sleep.

You want to choose an aromatherapy candle that has all natural ingredients. Some retailers add artificial ingredients to make the candle more appealing but it won’t provide you with the same benefits. You are encouraged to purchase soy aromatherapy candles instead of those made from paraffin wax. Soy candles are non-toxic, biodegradable, burn for hours, and they don’t produce smoke that can get into your lungs. Beeswax is a good choice too.

If you feel creative and adventurous you can make your own aromatherapy candles in your kitchen. You can make them for yourself or as great gifts for your friends and family. You can make the candle from aromatherapy oils that fit the personality of the person you plan to give it to. They will appreciate the personal touch as well as the benefits the candles provide them. For best results use soy wax or bees wax. You can purchase wicks, jars, color, aromatherapy oils, and wax online or at a craft store.

Melt your wax in a double boiler. When it completely melted add coloring and aromatherapy oil. Immediately pour the mixture into your candle jars. Place a wick in the center of the jar. Wrap it around a pencil at the top and lay it across the mouth of the jar. As your candles cool, make sure the wick is centered. Allow your candles to completely cool. This is a wonderful way for you to enjoy the best aromatherapy candles.

Get all the latest information about Aromatherapy Candle from the only true source at http://www.myaromatherapyinfo.com Be sure to check out our aromatherapy candle pages.

How Do Candles Burn?

The other day I was hard at work in my office when a pressing question came to mind. How do candles burn? OK, so it seems I have a little too much time on my hands. Nevertheless, it is an interesting question.
My wife and I make Soy Wax Candles, so we are burning candles all the time. What makes them burn, and why doesn't the wick just burn up? It is interesting to think of the science behind candles - but then again, I am a geek. Stick with me for a minute.

When you light a candle, the wick starts to burn and melts the wax around the wick. The melted wax is then absorbed into the wick and upward where the heat of the flame vaporizes the wax. It is the wax vapor that burns. The wick doesn't burn up, because the liquid wax cools the wick. (howthingswork.com)

Knowing how this works now, think about paraffin wax. Paraffin comes from refining crude oil. When wax made from paraffin vaporizes and burns, the nasty toxins in the paraffin are added to the air that you breath in your home.

This is not the case with soy wax candles. It works about the same way - the wick is lit, melts the wax which is absorbed into the wick, then vaporizes and burns. The difference is that there are no toxins released into the air as you burn the candle. Soy wax is much cleaner and cooler burning. I have also noticed that scented soy wax smells a lot better that scented paraffin wax.

Now that this pressing question has been answered, you are free to tackle much more difficult issues like - How to get that paraffin soot out of your drapes!

Andrea Rousseau and Dave Krigger are a husband and wife team who own http://www.keystonesoycandles.com and http://www.coolcraftedcandles.com Go Here for information on Candle Making

The Joy of Soy! - Soy Candles

While most of us are conscious of the desire for a healthier lifestyle through organic foods, natural skin and body products, and even healthier air through smoking bans, not everyone is aware of the possible harmful effects of burning traditional paraffin wax candles in their homes. Luckily, new soy-based candles are allowing families to burn virtually soot-free candles and still enjoy the lovely light and fragrances that we love in our homes.

Do you know where paraffin wax comes from? Paraffin is actually a derivative of kerosene. It is a byproduct of oil production, a sort of “bottom of the barrel” scraping of the oil barrel. It’s not surprising then, that one of the biggest complaints about traditional paraffin candles is the black residue or “soot” left on the containers, nearby walls, and fingers of those who are trying to clean their candles. Is it any great surprise then, that this same soot would be released into the air that you breathe while enjoying the smell of your candle? And that that same soot is going to coat any interior surfaces and then be possibly absorbed by skin contact? In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency did a study in 2001 titled “Candle Burning as a Potential Source of Indoor Air Pollution” (http://www.epa.gov/appcdwww/iemb/insideiaq/ss01.pdf) where they purchased 100 sets of candles with metal-cored wicks. They then measured the lead levels in the wicks and found that while burning, several of the wicks emitted lead at a rate from 100-1400 micrograms/hour. Burning these candles can result in lead concentrations above EPA recommended thresholds.

Paraffin wax also contains 11 dangerous compounds which have been classified as dangerous by the EPA, some of which have been labeled as carcinogenic. One of these compounds is carbon tetrachloride. Chronic exposure to elevated levels of this can cause liver, kidney, and central nervous system damage. The EPA has classified carbon tetrachloride as a “Group B2” compound, a human carcinogen. As a result, the American Lung Association has issued warnings regarding the burning of paraffin candles as a common, unrecognized cause of poor indoor air quality. In contrast, soy-based wax candles are derived from all-natural soybeans that are grown all around the world, especially in the United States . It is made by hydrogenating the oil of the soybeans, which are a renewable resource limited only to how many soybeans are grown. Therefore, they support the American farmer and help to relieve some of our dependency on foreign oil. Because it is made of natural products, it is also biodegradable and not as harmful to our planet’s health.

One of the best testimonials I’ve heard to date regarding the benefits of soy candles came from a friend who is a self-proclaimed “candle-holic”. She told me that she burned paraffin candles every evening in her family room and was starting to experience some symptoms of asthma. She purchased a small room air-cleaning system from a popular electronic store to try to ease her symptoms. She noticed that every time she cleaned the filter after burning candles, the filter was covered in the same black soot that she often found on her white upholstery. When she converted to using only natural soy candles, she not only found that her filter remained soot-free, but that her asthma symptoms also abated. What a great story!

Anyone who has tried to get paraffin wax out of a tablecloth will appreciate the fact that soy wax is easily removed from linens with soap and water. Now, rather than using a hot iron and blotting the item with a cloth for hours in an effort to save a family heirloom, a simple dab with soapy water will restore the linens to be used again. Furthermore, this simple cleaning strategy allows us to wash soy candle containers and use them again.

An additional benefit of soy candles is the lower temperature at which they burn. While many people have been burned when candle wax spilled on their skin, I know of a soy candle maker who accidentally spilled an entire shelf of liquefied soy wax candles on his leg. While his wife looked on in horror, he calmly wiped his leg with a nearby towel and didn’t have any redness or blistering. Since soy candles are burning at a lower temperature, it’s not a stretch to realize that they will therefore last longer (up to 10 hours per ounce) and continue to throw their room-warming fragrance for many hours after a traditional candle has burned out.

So, while many people start buy their first soy candles as a “healthier” alternative to the traditional paraffin candle, most continue to purchase them for so many more reasons! Oh the JOY of SOY!

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Jody_Olson

Finding the PERFECT Fragrance

While reading an email, I thought it would be fun, and different, to turn my reply into this months article; hoping the information will benefit those who are having the same decision-making trouble that Michelle was having. I'm thrilled at all the information you have collected in one place! I'm writing for two reasons, one to thank you, and two because I am baffled about WHICH fragrances to carry. Yesterday I was only going to produce soy travel tins, today I'm going to make votives and jars, as well!!! Anyway, I have been agonizing over this, I have several scents that I love and friends have loved them, too.

Would you be willing to take a moment to jot down some of the top sellers? And how important is it to find "THE PERFECT" plumeria or pumpkin or lavender fragrance oil...it seems each company does some better than others! Do I just KEEP buying them!?!?!? :)

  My Reply.......

   Hi Michelle,
I'm happy you enjoy the ebook, and thank you for your purchase. The reason you don't see a list of my top sellers is very simple. What I sold as my top sellers, over time, may be old news with all of the new fragrances being created each day by manufacturers. Location and season are also big factors. What is hot in my neck of the woods, might not sell at all in your area. So, while writing the ebook, I didn't want to influence the reader when it came to choosing scents for their own products.

I think the best way to choose fragrances is to first look at what you like. Also get input from friends and family, their likes and dislikes. Try to have a nice mix of scent types - don't make it all one sided by choosing only food fragrances, floral, etc. Make sure you have some of each category type, like food, spice, fruit, floral, etc. It also helps to look at the suppliers list of best sellers. That is a good indication of what they move the most of. If you go to three or four different supplier sites and you see that some of their top sellers are the same scents, even though each supplier is located in a different area of the country, that's a good indication that the fragrance is a hit. For my time at candle making these were Hot Apple Pie, Macintosh Apple, Cinnamon Buns, Hazelnut Coffee, and Honeysuckle to name a few.

Don't forget to include some standard fragrances to your list. Vanilla is a very good example of this one. I had 2 or 3 vanilla fragrances, all selling very well. To the buyer it's sort of like going into an ice cream shop with 31 flavors. If you don't know what to try, you know it's safe to go with something you are familiar with, which is Chocolate or Vanilla. I found this to apply to customers who were buying for someone else. If they needed a gift, but didn't know what the person would like, Vanilla was usually the fragrance purchased.

How to find the "Perfect" fragrance for me was finding something as realistic as possible. If the bottle of oil said "Pumpkin Pie", I wanted to be able to close my eyes, smell the fragrance, and honestly think there was a pie in front of me. If I couldn't do that, it wasn't for me. Honeysuckle, for example, was a challenge. We have it growing all around the edge of our yard, so I knew what the original was supposed to smell like. I finally came across one fragrance oil that fit the bill.

You will run into fragrances that will be an even bigger challenge - like the Sugar Cookie example I wrote about in the ebook. There are many different sugar cookie recipes, and everyone has their own favorite. As with my example, I wanted the smell of the baked cookie, while my pouring partner preferred the smell of the cookie dough. You will have to make you own decision on items like these - get input from family and friends - vote on it if you have to.

My last bit of advise for fragrance is this. If you find a scent that you think smells wonderful, your testers think it smells great, but no one has ever heard of it, try renaming it to something that you think your customer could familiarize with, or what it reminds you of. For example, If the actual name is Midnight, do you know what midnight smells like? I don't. But if it was called Summer Night, could you get a better visual in your head as to what it might smell like? Remember to apply these ideas to scents you create yourself.

***One final note, not all fragrances oils are created equal. Always request or purchase samples of the scents you are interested in. Until next time!

             Happy Pouring!

             ===============================================

Jean Ann Herley is the Author of "Stop Burning Time and Money in Your Candle Business" an informative new ebook that will teach you what NOT to do in the candle making business, as well as show you how to make your candle business thrive with less time money and research.

Candle Craft: How to Make Canning Jar Candles

Arts & Crafts with Rosie
http://grandmarosieshouse.com

Canning Jar Candles
by Rachel Paxton - rachel@creativehomemaking.com

Description: How to make holiday candle holders from canning jars--a great Christmas gift idea!

Canning jar candles are very easy to make, make great gifts, and are only limited by your imagination!

To start all you need are some narrow-mouth canning jars, wire ribbon, potpourri, votive candles, small glass votive candle holders, and craft glue or a hot glue gun.

If you don't have any old canning jars, you can find some very inexpensively at thrift stores and yard sales. Wire ribbon can be a little expensive. Look for it at yard sales and at craft store clearance sales. The after-Christmas sales a great time to stock up. One roll of ribbon will make several canning jar candles. Potpourri you can make yourself or buy on sale. Votive candles are inexpensive at stores like Target or Walmart, and you can also find glass votive candle holders very inexpensively at Walmart. You want one that will set in the rim of the canning jar.

You can fill the canning jar with whatever you wish. Potpourri is one of the easiest fillers. I bought a nice autumn-scented potpourri and added some orange slices I'd dried in my food dehydrator. You can also add dried cranberries, apple slices, or cinnamon sticks.

After you fill the jar, you set the candle holder inside the mouth of the jar. The top of the candle holder should be even with the top of the jar. You might have a little trial and error before you find just the right candle holder. Place the candle in the holder and then use the ribbon to tie a big bow around the neck of the jar. That's it! (You might want to use a little craft glue or your glue gun to tack the ribbon in place).

You can glue some dried fruit, flowers, or other decorations on the bow for a more decorative look. You can also put other things in the jar besides potpourri. I've seen one half filled with white sugar with a short white taper candle set down in the sugar. Very pretty! And that one doesn't require the candle holder.

At Christmas you can purchase small ornaments and place them in the jar instead of the potpourri. Any small figurine would do--in the spring you could use little bunnies.

Maybe fill a jar with marbles or layers of colored sand. Even pennies! Use your imagination. These candles make great gifts and are also fun to make for yourself. If you get tired of one just empty it out and start again!

Originally published at Suite 101. Paraffin (a by product of oil refining) and Bee Wax (a natural product).

MELTING POT - Special melting pots for wax are available at craft stores, but old aluminum pots do fine.

CANDLE MOLDS - You can buy a variety of metal, plastic and rubber candle molds from craft stores. Old utensils, cake and muffin tins, soap molds, eggshells, milk cartons etc. can also be used as molds.

ADDITIVES - Stearic acid increases the hardness of the wax. Luster crystals extend the burning time of a candle and improve the overall appearance. You can add color and scent by shaving small bits from special blocks and putting them into the melted wax. Candle perfumes are available in two types - liquid scent oil and scent blocks.

BASIC DIRECTIONS:

1. Prepare mold by greasing and inserting a wick in it.

2. Melt Wax, add color and other additives if desired, and pour in greased mold.

3. Hold the wick straight by tying it to a pencil and placing the pencil across the diameter of the top of the mold.

4. Allow wax to cool completely.

5. Remove the candle from the mold and trim the wick to desired length.

Content Copyright © I Love To CRAFT.
Article provided by http://www.iLovetoCRAFT.com. Visit us for more craft ideas and free patterns.

Holiday Decorating Tips: Christmas Candles

How to Light Up Your Home for Joy

Do you love the winter holiday season or does this time of year cause you stress? One way to lower your holiday stress, using fewer decorations, decreases your "just have to much to do" list. However, you still want to display Christmas candles because these decorations bring smiles to you and your loved ones. As days grow shorter and cooler and the suns sets earlier, people naturally crave the warmth and comfort of light, especially natural sources such as a bonfire or the flame of a Christmas candle.

Christmas Candle Tips

Luminaries

Save your energy and your money. You don't need to line your entire sidewalk with luminaries. Get a similar effect with four large candles in clear glass containers near your front door. These glowing candles will welcome your guests without all the work of gathering bags, buying votive candles that just burn up fast, and shoveling all that sand.

Window Candles
Many cultural holiday traditions include placing a lighted candle in front windows to be seen from the outside. Pamper yourself. Place a candle in any dark window at night. Rather than peering into a dark void, you'll focus on the cheerful flame and feel comforted and uplifted.

Gift Yourself
Create a nightly quiet ritual for yourself in a quiet place away from distractions and the hustle of the holidays. Place candles around your bathtub and unwind, or by your favorite reading chair and instead of reading sit in the quiet and reflect upon the brightness of a single candlelight. Listen to quiet music or simply enjoy the peace and stillness. Ponder the joys in your life and express gratitude. This quiet time may be your most treasured gift to yourself.

Candlelight Carol-Sing
Recycle last year's greeting cards by cutting each into a disk or rounding the edges, punch a hole in the center, and slide a taper candle half-way through the hole. Gather your friends and family around the piano or hearth and sing familiar Christmas carols as each person holds their own candlelight. Pause to reflect upon the fact that each individual brings their own special light to the world and recognize the common spiritual light in each of us.

Candle Night-Night
When it's time to settle the children down to bed on Christmas Eve, calm them with a soothing candlelight ritual. My daughter’s children walk to bed, each carefully carrying a lighted candle through a dark hallway, singing "Silent Night."

Happy Holidays!© Jeanette Fisher
Free holiday decorating ideas teleclass, "Interior Design Secrets to Glorious Holiday Decorating" and more holiday decorating tips Joy Holidays Decorating http://JoyHolidays.com

Are Everyday Candles Destroying Your Home And Health?

Click Here for Healthy & Safe Soy Veggie Blend Candles

Did you know that most candles are made from the sludge in the bottom of a barrel of oil which is bleached and texturized with a chemical called acrolein? They're called paraffin candles and burning one puts all the same horrible toxins and carcinogens (cancer causing agents) into the air in your home that burning diesel fuel in your home would.

The National Candle Association estimates that more than 7 million people in the US alone burn candles every year. But testing by the EPA has confirmed that those candles, and the smoke and soot they give off, contain several dangerous chemicals in significant quantities. These chemicals include known or probable carcinogens, neurotoxins and reproductive toxins.

The American Lung Association also warns that burning paraffin candles can emit toxins (in measurable amounts) into your home's air. It might shock you to learn that after burning just a few paraffin candles in your home, the overall effect on the quality of the air in your home could be worse than the air in major cities like Los Angeles! Not only is your health affected, but the health of your pets and children as well.

Cathy Flanders who has been at the forefront of addressing health and safety issues involving candles says, "With the current 'candle-craze' and increased candle burning in homes, expectant Moms need to be aware of the fact that the emissions from some candles are toxic, reproductive toxins, neuro-toxins and/or carcinogens. This has been a growing cause for concern for the EPA and children's health agencies."

And it might hit your pocket book soon too. Not only is the price of oil spiraling out of control, but you might have a nasty surprise the next time you go to renew your homeowners insurance.

The NIA Group (Insurance and Financial Services) lists the following problems with paraffin candles in an article on their website:

1) Reduces the internal air quality in your home.
2) Damage by particulate deposits on interior and exterior walls, carpets, furniture, appliances, window treatments, floors and other surfaces.
3) Contributes to health problems from inhaling particulate matter or ingesting harmful chemicals.
4) Spews hazardous chemicals that are either in the paraffin wax, the wick, or are present when paraffin wax is burned....Acetone, Benzene, Trichlorofluoromethane, Carbon Disulfide, 2-Butanone, Trichloroethane, Trichloroethene, Carbon Tetrachloride, Tetrachloroethene, Toluene, Chlorobenzene, Ethylbenzene, Styrene, Xylene, Phenol, Cresol, Cyclopentene and Lead.

They go on to say...
"Another surprise is that the candle-making industry is not required to tell consumers about the ingredients used in their products, including when a wick is used which contains a lead core."

No one knows for sure if paraffin candles cause cancer, but there are at least 4 cancer-causing chemicals associated with paraffin candles. The EPA lists these chemicals on their website:

1) Benzene (EPA classification as Group A, known human carcinogen).
2) Carbon Tetrachloride (EPA classification as Group B2 probable human carcinogen).
3) Trichloroethane (EPA classification as Group C, possible human carcinogen).
4) Toluene (EPA classification as Group B2 probable human carcinogen).

Would you burn animal fat in your home? Most of us would answer an emphatic “No!” or “Yuck!” to that question, but like something straight out of a horror movie, you might react in horror to realize that you probably are burning animal fat in your home when you burn paraffin candles. That's because many paraffin candles contain large amounts of animal fats to give them a more textured or rustic look.

So what's the alternative? Believe it or not, the answer comes from soybeans. The soy plant produces a waxy substance that not only burns cooler, but can burn up to 50% longer than paraffin wax. Since soy wax is derived from plants, it’s a renewable resource that's a pleasure for candle makers to work with.

Some of the surprising benefits of soy candles include:
* Burn with no toxins, carcinogens or choking soot.
* Burn up to 50% longer than paraffin candles.
* Cruelty-free, contain no animal fats.
* Non-toxic, biodegradable, derived from a renewable resource.
* Cleans up easily with soap and hot water.
* Better for the environment.
* Use no nasty chemicals to release fragrance.
* Supports the American farmer - not foreign oil.

As more and more people learn about the harmful effects of burning paraffin candles in their homes, they're substituting soy candles with surprising results.

Karen Key, a mother of three in Washington state, had this to say,
"I'm asthmatic and when I burn paraffin candles in my home, or get around smoke or perfumy scents, my airway closes down and I start to panic. So I was more than a little nervous when a friend lit a scented soy candle in front of me. I have to say I'm completely amazed. Shocked is a better word. With soy candles I now have no problem breathing and I can finally enjoy the beauty and magic of candles in my home once again!"

So the next time you want to create a warm, inviting, and romantic atmosphere in your home, don’t destroy your home - or your health, choose all-natural soy candles as a healthy alternative.

To reach the author, learn more about soy candles or start your own fun and highly profitable soy candle making business go to: http://www.soycandlemaker.biz "The most fun you’ll have making money!" A soft, warm glow, complimented by an incredibly sweet scent make Beeswax candles a must for around the house. Beeswax candles are quite simple to make, and something you can do together with the kids. Good wholesome fun for the whole family! You will need the following supplies to get started:

Some Beeswax sheets
Some primed wick
A sharp knife
A cutting board

1. Roll out the Beeswax sheet on your work surface.

2. Cut a length of wick, approximately two inches longer than the width of your Beeswax sheet.

3. Place the wick along the edge of the Beeswax sheet, and fold the sheet approximately 1/8 of an inch over the wick. Be sure to press down on the sheet to make sure the wax completely surrounds the wick.

4. Once the wick has been secured in the Beeswax sheet, it is time to start rolling. Be very careful not to damage or disrupt the honeycomb pattern on the wax. Roll the candle slowly, and be sure to keep it straight.

5. Once you have reached the end of the sheet, gently press down on the exposed edge to ensure that your candle does not come apart.

6. Pick which end you feel will make the best "top" and trim the wick down to approximately ½ inch. Also remove the exposed wick completely from the other end.

You now have some wonderful Beeswax candles that will provide you with hours of warmth and light! They make wonderful gifts, and your children will take great pride in having made them. These candles will add comfort, elegance, and tradition to your home or work space.

Beeswax candles have been used since the early 14th century, and they are still preferred by many due to their sweet, natural aroma. Beeswax candles are long lasting and clean burning. The American Lung Association has stated that burning paraffin candles can emit small amounts of toxins such as lead, benzene, and mercury into your home.

As an alternative, they recommend using Beeswax candles to light the way. I wholeheartedly agree!

Cassie Morgan is an avid candle fan who loves candles (http://www.candlesandcandlemaking.com/ )in her spare time. There are many ways to make personalized candles, depending on how much time and money you are willing to spend. With just a little extra time and effort, you can make a personalized candle out of an otherwise ordinary candle gift that the lucky recipient will love.

1. The simplest way to make a personalized candle is get a normal candle at your local candle store. Even general retail stores like Walmart sometimes have candles for sale. Candles come in all shapes and sizes, but almost any candle can be personalized.

2. Anything smaller than a tea light will be difficult to personalize. For tea light candles, you can normally purchase a big bag for a low price. These candles are great as favors for guests at a wedding or baby shower. The easiest way to personalize is to use either a graphics program on your computer or a word processor. We'll stick with the Word processor since it is easier. First, draw a circle the same dimensions as the lid on the tea light, or better yet use a circular label sheet. Then select a nice font, like cursive script or Corsiva. You can enter then names and date of the event into the circle. Print out a sample on plain paper to make sure the look and size is right. Once you have the desired result, you can print your tea light label stickers. Finally, apply the sticker onto the top of the tea light.

3. For jar candles, you can create a square-shaped personalized label. Since you have more area to work with, you can download free graphics from the Internet. Search the web for "free clip art" and download the images you want. Once again print out a sample on plain paper and then print the label. If you don't have a color printer, you can go to a local copier and they can make a nice label for you. Stick the label on the jar. Now you have created a unique gift personalized just for that special person.

4. For tall pillar candles, you can get those engraved at an engraving shop (look in the phone book under engravers). The artwork and text can come in different colors. If you are artistic, you can even buy candle-engraving kits online and do it yourself.

5. How about those 1oz votive candles? For a professional looking gift, get cellophane bags and colored ribbon. Wrap the candle in the cello bag and tie it up with the ribbon. Then attach a personalized tag to the ribbon. These candles can also be engraved.

6. If you can make candles, then there are limitless possibilities. You can use different fragrances oils to create scented candles. You can use embeds for decoration. Cookie cutters and molds are also useful for designing the right shape.

In summary, you can take an ordinary store candle and make it a very special gift with just a little more effort. Your friends and loved ones will cherish these gifts for years to come.

Criss White is a professional web writer on baby and new mother topics. Aromatherapy candles provide a way to do that in an elegant and natural way.

It should be noted that true aromatherapy candles are not the same thing as merely scented candles we often find on the shelf of any supermarket. Scented candles contain a fragrance only. True aromatherapy candles are created using natural essential oils that can truly have a therapeutic effect on the mood and body.

Aromatherapy candles can be used for a wide variety of purposes, including the relief of stress and anxiety. Lavender is particularly well suited for this purpose. It is the perfect aromatherapy candle to come home to after a long hard day at work.

If you find that you’re having trouble relaxing or possibly suffer from insomnia, consider lighting a small sage aromatherapy candle. The oil in this candle will help to relax you so that you can get a good night’s sleep. Just be sure to completely extinguish the candle before turning in for the night. A chamomile aromatherapy candle is also an excellent choice if you need to relax and reduce stress and anxiety.

Suffering from a cold or just not feeling up to par? Candles can create a peaceful, pleasant and soothing atmosphere. The flame of a candle sets off an emotional trigger, affecting the human senses. The sense of smell (especially with some of the scented candles on the market), and not to mention the calming effect a burning candle creates on a cold evening.

Create a visual impact with a group of candles, perhaps arranged together in different heights. Surrounded by a floral arrangement, they can make a statement anywhere. If not a floral arrangement, then gather some of your collectibles and place a candle or two among them. Candles are such a versatile, decorative item.

Votive candles always work very well in a tabletop setting. It is best to always burn them in a votive holder. You will get better results because your votive will burn and last longer. Votive holders come in a variety of styles and designs. Not only for tabletop, but wall mounts and sconces as well. Use votives to create a sensual atmosphere in your bedroom or around the bath or hot tub.

You have probably seen this next tip on those decorating TV shows. During the summer months, when your fireplace is not in use, place a candle arrangement in there, perhaps backed by a mirror to reflect the light, creating a cozy feeling at night, and a very eye catching niche during the day.

Candles, candleholders and accessories make terrific gifts for virtually any occasion. A candle is a gift given, knowing it will be used and appreciated.

In the marketplace, candle colors, as well as sizes, shapes and scents, present us with endless choices. Speaking of colors, how about the color black? Now, stay with me here! Consider wrought iron candleholders, votive holders or sconces. Candles can bring you so much pleasure as you watch the flame flicker or enjoy the wonderful aroma of your favorite scent.

Candles have been used for many things in life. They have been used for the simple use of light, especially when the electricity is out. They’re use for the romantic evening is legendary. For the luxurious bath, along with music and a glass of wine. A candlelight dinner makes the culinary delights that much better. They are even used to remove the wax in your ears! They are known to shoo away bugs when your enjoying your evening on the patio. When you have a party and there are smokers in the home, a few lit candles will eat up the smoke in your home. Of course, lets not forget the yearly celebrations of birthdays, one candle will light the rest.

There are many uses for the wax on a candle. I use mine to make the sliding doors work better, just rub in the runners. Use on screws that are exposed to the outdoors if you are removing them regularly. Great for saws. Rub them on wooden drawers so they glide smoothly. As you can see they are quite versatile.

If you sit and hone in on the flame after a very rough day it will calm the very heart. I keep several candles on my coffee table and when I am feeling upset or nervous I will just sit and watch the flames flicker and my day has melted away in a very short time. I love watching the blue and gold dancing. My personal aromas are vanilla, cinnamon and the slight scent of the sea. They are very calming.

Of course, if you add the pleasant tinkle of wind chimes it adds to the enjoyment. There are many different types of chimes to choose from. You can have the delicate sound of small metal pipes blowing in the wind of the solid yet deep sound of the very tall wooden ones. Sort of a calling from the woods. I have glass wind chimes about the house and enjoyment them immensely. I also have a sound activated one in the home where the wind cannot touch them. Whatever your pleasure there are so many to choose from.

As with anything you must be careful in using candles. Always be sure they are contained either on a glass or metal plate or in a holder that will not tip. Always keep away from any kind of fabric that will ignite. Never leave the house without extinguishing the flame! If you have a tendency to forget leave a note on the door when you light one.

I wish you all the time and pleasure of candles and wind chimes in your very hurried life.

Candles, windchimes, and incense
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Sheila_Muller-bouchard

Start Your Own Marlo Quinn Home Business Today! http://marloquinnforyou.com
